ENGLISH LANGUAGE/LITERATURE
AS and A2 LEVEL

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A*, A or B grades in English and/or English Literature at GCSE level, but with the possibility of negotiation in special circumstances.

AIMS

This course will appeal to those who have an interest in both areas of Language and Literature.

ASSIGNMENTS

Essays are set on a regular basis, along with preparatory work for class discussions. There is, in addition, on-going work on the folders of coursework which are submitted as part of the final assessment.

CONTENTS A/S Units:

  1. Introduction to Language and Literature study; using an anthology of texts on the theme of Education.

            (35% of A/S, 17½% of A2)

  1. The Changing Language of Literature; in which students study two texts in the same genre written at least a century apart.

(35% of AS, 17½% of A2)

  1. Production of Texts; requiring two items of original writing for different purposes and audiences.

      (30% of AS, 15% of A2)

  1. Text Transformation; re-writing material from a different perspective.

      (15% of A2)

  1. Talk in Life and Literature; using a Shakespeare play and transcripts of natural speech.

      (15% of A2)

  1. Critical Approaches; analysing unprepared texts.

      (20% of A2)

ASSESSMENT

Units 3 and 4 are presented as folders of coursework. The remaining units are assessed by written
examinations, from 1½ to 2½ hours in length.
