ENGLISH LITERATURE
AS and A2 LEVEL

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A*, A or B grades in English and/or English Literature at GCSE Level, but with the possibility of negotiation in special circumstances.

AIMS

Students will read widely and learn the skills of responding to literary texts of different types and periods. They will gain a deeper understanding of the way in which writers use language in order to express their opinions and emotions, and view works of literature within their historical context.

ASSIGNMENTS

Essays are set on a regular basis, along with preparatory work for class discussions.  There is, in addition, on-going work on the folders of coursework which are submitted as part of the final assessment.

CONTENTS

At A/S Level, students will follow three modules, comprising an Introduction to the study of Literature, Poetry, Drama and Shakespeare – the latter in the form of coursework.

At A2 Level there will be work on Comparing Texts (coursework) earlier Poetry and Drama (pre-1900 and pre-1770 respectively) and an Exploration of Unseen Texts.

ASSESSMENT

A coursework folder in both years, complemented by examinations in the other modules.

USEFULNESS IN THE FUTURE

An ‘A’ Level pass in this subject is recognised by all universities as an entry qualification for a full range of courses, in both the Arts and Sciences.  It is also widely valued as a qualification for employment
