GERMAN
AS and A2 LEVEL
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
A minimum of a "B" at GCSE is recommended.
AIMS
- To enable the students to use German for the purpose of communication.
- To foster the ability to collect, analyse and exchange information, ideas, attitudes and opinions through the medium of the German Language.
- To encourage an interest in the contemporary society, institutions, way of life and culture of German speaking countries.
ASSIGNMENTS
At least three or four pieces of written and/or learning homework a week.
CONTENTS
The course consists of seven lessons a week. Two members of the German staff teach the topic based course, using "Zeitgeist" as the main course book. This is supplemented by a wide variety of authentic printed and recorded materials.
Students are encouraged to do work experience in Pegnitz, Bavaria, where we have a partner school. We recommend that they invest in a German journal and a good German dictionary.
ASSESSMENT
To understand, use and manipulate the foreign language in the above-mentioned skill areas. There are two exams at the end of each year. One spoken exam with an external examiner and one written exam which also assesses Listening and Reading skills
USEFULNESS IN THE FUTURE
The course is designed to cater for students intending to embark on a traditional honours degree in Languages or one of the many newer degree courses with a Modern Language component. It would also be useful for students for whom the study of a language might provide a useful secondary skill. The ability to communicate in a European Language is increasingly becoming an asset for job seekers.
