ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

1.  Four GCSEs at grade C or above.  English and Mathematics at C grade are desirable.
GCSE Health and Social Care is not essential.

2.  GNVQ Health and Social Care at Intermediate, Merit or Distinction.

AIMS

To enable the student to experience a different form of study, where he/she adopts ownership for the organisation and development of the tasks set. The course allows students to study all aspects of Health and Social Care and enables them to progress onto Higher Education or employment. It provides relevant work related learning.

ASSIGNMENTS

An ability to study independently is a key aspect of all vocational courses at Advanced level. Tutors are available for guidance outside timetabled lessons, but students need to adopt self-discipline and good personal organisation and are responsible for completing units of work for the given deadlines.

CONTENTS

Students may select the AS (three unit) and/or AS (six unit) double awards in the first year of the course.  They may progress to either the six or twelve unit awards at A2 in the second year of the course.

The AS level specifications include the following areas of study:-

  • Promoting quality care
  • Communication in care settings
  • Promoting good health
  • Caring for people with additional needs
  • Health as a lifestyle choice
  • Health and Safety in care settings

At A2 level the following areas are studied:-

  • Care Practice and Provision
  • Understanding Human Behaviour
  • Anatomy and Physiology in Practice
  • Child Development
  • Social Trends

Students will spend two weeks on work related learning in Health and Social Care settings.  Outside speakers, visits, links with industry and the local community and personal research are all important aspects of the course.  This is an integral part of the courses.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is based on portfolio and external examinations.  Students are encouraged to monitor their own progress against their nationally predicted grades.  Portfolio work will be awarded points equivalent to grades A - E.

USEFULNESS IN THE FUTURE

The course is accepted by Higher Education establishments.  It allows the student to continue their education especially within the Health and Social Care professions.  In the past St Wilfrid’s Sixth Form students have used these qualifications for Nursing, Health Studies, Physiotherapy, Radiography, Occupational Therapy, Teaching and similar courses at universities.
