MATHEMATICS
AS and A2 Level

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Candidates will be expected to have achieved at least a grade B from the GCSE Mathematics syllabus before embarking on this course.

CONTENT
Two thirds of the course consists of Pure Mathematics which involves a depth of understanding in algebra and trigonometry in particular. The remaining one third consists of Applied Mathematics in which students can choose to study either Mechanics or Statistics. Mechanics students are introduced to Mathematical modelling, kinematics, statics and dynamics which are topics especially helpful to those following a Physics course. Statisticians, instead, are taught to analyse and effectively handle data which are particularly useful skills for students of the Arts and Humanities.

ASSESSMENT
Assessment consists of 3 module examinations in the L6 for AS and a further 3 modules for A2 in the U6. Both the two Pure and the one Applied modules of each year are equally weighted and are of 1½ hours duration. There is one piece of coursework to be completed in the U6 for Pure Mathematics.

USEFULNESS FOR THE FUTURE
A qualification in Mathematics at this level is highly regarded by all universities and enhances any other subject choices.
