MUSIC

It is our principal aim to make music enjoyable for all pupils.

In Year 7 the music curriculum aims to develop pupils’ own musical interests and skills. Through detailed schemes of work, pupils experience a variety of tasks designed to develop their competence and confidence in the three main areas of activity: performing, composing and listening.

The music curriculum is planned so that every pupil has the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding. We expect pupils to develop not only the skills to perform confidently and accurately, but to gain enjoyment and satisfaction from composing their own music. During Year 7 pupils will perform and compose music in a variety of styles and traditions, from different times and places. We expect pupils to be able to talk about the music they hear with understanding. They will work individually, in groups of different sizes and as a class. Pupils will use a range of instruments during the year, including increasing use of ICT to create music.

In Year 7 programmes of study include work on starting to compose, form and structure, African music, major and minor keys, Gamelan music and chords.

A variety of instrumental and vocal tuition is available.

Music pupils should also make the most of extra curricular opportunities including Junior Choir and whole school musicals.
