RE
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Within the context of a Church School, Religious Education will support children and young people in developing their own beliefs, values and attitudes through an exploration of Christianity and other religions in the contemporary world, with such emphasis on Anglican beliefs and practices as appropriate to the situation at St Wilfrid’s.
To discuss with the pupils the existence of the spiritual dimension of life in such a way as to enable pupils to make rational and informed decisions about spiritual matters and so find faith by which to live.
To encourage pupils to reflect upon the offer of the Christian Faith in an appropriate manner.
To encourage our pupils to be aware of and respectful towards those whose religious beliefs and practices are different from our own.
Religious Education is offered to all pupils as a discrete and independent subject. All classes in Years 7-9 have 2 periods per week. In line with Diocesan guidelines, 80% of our content is of the Judeo-Christian tradition and 20% is World Religions, namely, Islam, Judaism and Hinduism. All pupils are entered for GCSE Religious Studies full course or short course.
We have developed a variety of teaching approaches, including the formal didactic style, group work, full-class discussion, formal debates, video and DVD, worksheets, study booklets, text book and internet based research, individual projects and group-based projects. We use the ICT facilities, especially in the presentation projects and coursework.
Assessment takes the form of a levelling task within each module and a test at the end of each module. Books are taken in for formal marking every half term and are monitored informally in lessons. Marking provides attainment and effort grades. Comments explain where the student was successful and how they can improve. Target grades help to give meaning to current attainment.
