SCIENCE

The Science department delivers the new KS3 programme of study to Year 7 through an investigative approach using an integrated science course covering the key concepts, key processes, curriculum opportunities, range and content.

Pupils will be taught seven themes of work in year 7 covering:

• Energy, electricity and forces
• Chemical and material behaviour
• Organisms, behaviour and health
• The environment, Earth and universe.

In the Science area we aim:

• To make science fun, visually exciting and active.
• To support “how science works”, to raise engagement in lessons and to help with progression to GCSE.
• To develop the learners scientific skills and personalised learning and thinking skills (PLTS).
• To focus on personalisation allowing each pupil to reach their potential.
• To use assessment for learning techniques to support and motivate individual learners.

The science department consists of 14 teachers and 3 full time technicians. Chemistry, biology and physics are taught by subject specialists. Most members of the department teach the full age range, including Sixth Form, and all teach across the full ability range. Pupils with special educational needs are set purely according to their ability in science and their needs will be met in the context of their set
