Our Academy » 50th Anniversary

This academic year, St Wilfrid's C of E Academy is celebrating 50 years of providing an excellent faith-led education in the Diocese of Blackburn.

To mark this milestone, the Academy is hosting a variety of celebratory events and activities throughout the year.

The latest information about each event will be available on this page, so keep checking back as new events are released.

SEPTEMBER

The Hanging of the Prayer Leaves - Wednesday 28th September

As a Church of England Academy, we believe the best way to launch the 50th anniversary celebrations is to take a moment and be thankful for all of our local faith leaders and establishments. Each student has been given the opportunity to write a prayer or a note of thanks to their own faith leader. The leaves will be hung up on the trees that line the student quad. As the autmun arrives and the leaves fall, these prayers will remain on the tree as a symbol of the longstanding impact these leaders have had on our lives. Keep an eye on our Facebook/Twitter pages for photos.

OCTOBER

St Wilfrid's Day - Wednesday 12th October

For this year's St Wilfrid's Day service, we are inviting former members of staff to come and join us in a special celebration at Blackburn Cathedral. It will be a memorable occasion for all, and former staff are also invited to join us for the annual procession from the Academy to the Cathedral prior to the service. Invitations will be sent out by the end of September, please RSVP to cholt@saintwilfrids.com

NOVEMBER

The Planting of the Commemorative Trees and Daffodils - 17th November

Part of our desire for marking the 50th anniversary of the Academy was to plant something that represents the 50 years. With this in mind, and in partnership with BwD council and the 'Friends of Whalley Banks' project, we will be planting 5 silver birch trees, one for each decade, next to the Academy on the side facing Bank Top. We will also be planting one daffodil for each student, staff member and governor that is currently here. If you are interested in coming down to the Academy to witness this event, please contact CHolt@saintwilfrids.com first, as space to accommodate guests will be very limited.

DECEMBER

Nine Lessons and Carols - 15th December 7:00PM - 8:30PM

Our annual Christmas event at the Cathedral will be another opportunity to come together as an Academy in celebration of the anniversary. The Nine Lessons will be read by a mixture of current and former students and staff. The festive carols always sound majestic as they ring through every corner of the impressive sanctuary. We always encourage arriving early to secure a seat, with the doors opening at 6:30PM. Please contact cholt@saintwilfrids.com to RSVP and reserve your place.

We are also looking for Senior Choir members to join together as an ensemble for the evening! Former head of Music at St Wilfrid's, Mr Howard Seymour, is currently recruiting and has passed on these words:

"Music and audio files for learning would be sent out well in advance. There would have to be a rehearsal beforehand - probably during the previous week and possibly over the weekend of 10/12, 11/12, but I wouldn’t arrange this if it precluded singers from away. We may even live dangerously and have it on the afternoon of the event and have a separate session for ‘locals’. At this stage I don’t want people to decline on account of possible rehearsal difficulties – we’ll get round that somehow.

When singers respond – to howardseymour@nasuwt.net, I would like to know:

1. Name and full contact details (including maiden name in the case of married ladies).

2. Voice part sung in school – indicating divisions as appropriate, and/or what you sing now.

3. Identify any impossible dates for rehearsal.

JANUARY

Commencement of New Building - Tuesday 31st January

A new extension to the current property will begin development in January 2017. To celebrate this, a photoshoot will take place with key personnel involved in the project. It is an exciting addition to the resources at the Academy, and will see a large multi-purpose area on the ground floor, with additional classroom space above. Keep an eye out on Facebook for more pictures of the development.

FEBRUARY

Book of Prayer - Launching this Month

We are excited to announce this inspiring compilation project. The 'Book of Prayer' will be a collection of prayers from current and former staff and students and other friends of the Academy, as they share some of the prayers that have helped them throughout the years.

You can check your eligibility and submit your own prayer for consideration, by visiting: http://bit.ly/stwBOP

All submissions will be reviewed and limited space is available.

MARCH

Academy Tours - Wednesday 29th March (9:15am, 11:30am and 1:30pm)

We will be opening up the doors and inviting former staff and students to come and explore the Academy as it is now. There is also the opportunity to take part in a 'memory collection', where our hope is to capture and record memories from our visitors, either through the donation of old photographs, through short written memoirs, or even on video. If you are interested in attending this event, please contact CHolt@saintwilfrids.com with your preferred timeslot. Alternatively, if you are unable to attend the event but would like to take part in the memory collection, please conatct PGreen@saintwilfrids.com for further details.
