God and Life

“Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.”
John 1:3-4

Have you ever watched a film or read a book, and thought it sounds like something else you have read or watched before? This happens all the time in the Bible. There are sections that deliberately link back to previous parts. This is intentional. The new section is a piece that is meant to be connected, just like a jigsaw, with what came before.

In Genesis 1, we read, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth”. In John 1, we read, “Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” This link indicates strongly the belief that Christians have, that Jesus and God are one.

Everything in creation was created on purpose and for a purpose. That’s why so many are fascinated by the study of living things and why documentaries like Blue Planet are so popular. We can see the ‘what’ or creation, but we can only wonder of the ‘how’ and ‘why’ it all exists.

As we consider our time in education, let us consider the amazing progress that you have already achieved. The reality is that many of you will not be able to remember your time in nursery and reception. You may have photos and videos, but our memories are often not recalled easily form those first few years. From the age of 3 to 18, we all have the opportunity to grow in our knowledge and understanding.

Have you heard of the amazing growth of the Chinese Bamboo?

In the first four years, the growth is deep and unseen. In the fifth year, in just six weeks, the growth is external and rapid. The question is, did it take six weeks to grow, or five years?

The life of the tallest tree started small, in a seed. The seed was created with the purpose of growth. Not all growth is external and visible. Let us consider this week in what areas we are growing. Let us take responsibility to plant the right seeds, water and fertilise; so that we grow strong and healthy lives.

What is your response?
As you read the devotional, set some time aside to ask God how the word can change you today.
James 1:22 says "Do not merely listen to the word...do what it says." How can you live out the challenges set, or share the encouragement from the post today?
