House System
When a student (or staff member!) joins the Academy, they are placed into one of five Houses: Exeter, Lincoln, Oxford, Ripon or Truro.
Throughout the academic year, the Houses compete in a variety of activities and sporting events.
Big events such as the Swimming Gala, House Pantomimes and Sports Day, are spaced out well with smaller week-to week-events for all years, including Pictionary, Curling, Bench Ball and Hula-Hooping to name just a few. All are also involved in attendance and sanction points, which get added to the overall scores each half term – therefore being in the Academy and behaviour in lessons are also part of the process.
At the end of the year, the House with the most points from all activities is crowned champion!
This dose of healthy competition brings a great balance to the academic side of school life. We see great bonds of friendship created not only amongst the students in different year groups, but also between staff members.
House Captains and Ambassadors
As part of the House System we promote leadership from within the year groups. Students that show commitment to the events are given the chance to support their House Tutor by becoming House Ambassadors (Y7 – 10). This give the younger students the chance to gain confidence and lead small groups of their peers. Once you get to Year 11 onwards they get the opportunity to become House Captains for their House where they help to lead in assemblies and support the House Tutor to fill events and promote the system around the Academy.
Partnership with Compassion
The House System is proud to sponsor 5 children through Compassion International, which we have done for a number of years. Each House has a child that we support through gifts, letters and donations. One of our biggest achievements is that we have helped one of the sponsor children to come out of poverty through the support given.
