Student Leadership
At St Wilfrid’s Church of England Academy, we believe that student leadership is an essential part of school life. When given the opportunity, young people can make a powerful and lasting impact—not only within the school community but also beyond it.
We are committed to helping students develop the confidence, character, and communication skills they need to become effective leaders. Taking on a leadership role helps students to grow in responsibility, initiative, and service, while also enriching their learning experience and preparing them for life after school.
Leadership in Action
There are many ways that students can take on leadership roles across the Academy. These include:
- Student Council – A team of elected year group representatives who meet regularly to share ideas, discuss school life, and represent the voice of their peers. They work closely with staff and leadership to bring about meaningful change and improvement.
- Head Student Team (HST) – A group of senior student leaders, including Head Students and Deputies, who play a key role in leading initiatives, representing the school at events, and acting as role models to others.
- Form Leaders and Ambassadors – Students who support their form tutors and peers, help with organisation, and promote positive behaviour and community spirit.
- Subject Ambassadors – Passionate students who support departments in promoting their subject area through events, mentoring, and celebration of achievements.
- Faith and Worship Leaders – Students who take an active role in collective worship, including reading, leading prayers, preparing reflections, and participating in chaplaincy events.
- Sports Leaders – Students who assist with clubs, teams, and sporting events, helping to lead and inspire others through physical activity.
Our student leaders reflect the values we strive to instil in all our students: integrity, service, compassion, and courage. One of our Head Students captured this spirit beautifully in her reflections on what leadership truly means:
“Leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it's about caring enough to listen, to uplift, and to empower the voices that have too often gone unheard. Your story, like mine, might be full of challenges, but carry its essence with pride; you never know whose heart it may touch, or whose potential it may awaken.”

At St Wilfrid’s, we empower students not just to lead, but to lead with purpose—becoming change-makers in our Academy and the wider world.
