Extra Curricular

At St Wilfrid’s Church of England Academy, we offer a wide variety of clubs and extra-curricular activities during and after school that we hope will appeal to all students’ interests and talents.

We believe that a student’s journey through school is about much more than academic success. While securing strong qualifications is important, we also value the broader experience our students receive. Time spent exploring hobbies, developing new skills, and building friendships through extra-curricular activities plays a vital role in shaping confident, happy, and healthy young people who are ready to thrive in life beyond school.

We have an extensive and diverse extra-curricular programme, which includes opportunities across several key areas:

  • Sports and Physical Activity – such as football, netball, dance, and fitness clubs.
  • Creative and Performing Arts – including art, drama, choir, music ensembles, and school productions.
  • STEM and Academic Enrichment – including science club, coding, book groups, chess, and more.
  • Faith and Reflection – such as Youth Alpha and chaplaincy discussion groups.
  • Leadership and Service – including prefects, Head Students, subject ambassadors, Student Council, and volunteering initiatives.

Our programme runs throughout the academic year, and we actively encourage students to get involved. At the same time, we’re always open to new ideas. If there’s a club or activity students would love to see offered, we’ll do our very best to make it happen.

The Wilfridian Awards

In Years 7, 8, and 9, students have the opportunity to work towards our in-house Wilfridian Awards. These awards recognise commitment to personal development across a range of categories, encouraging students to step out of their comfort zones and develop new interests. Whether it’s through sport, creativity, service, leadership, or faith-based activities, students are rewarded for their engagement and growth—becoming well-rounded individuals who reflect our Academy’s core values.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

From Year 9 onwards, students can also take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. This nationally recognised programme supports young people in developing essential life skills through four key areas: volunteering, physical activity, learning a new skill, and completing an expedition. It’s an exciting and challenging opportunity that fosters resilience, independence, and teamwork—qualities that serve our students well into the future.
