Key Stage 3

Subject Introduction

The aim of the Year 7 scheme of learning is to explore what methods, processes and techniques artists use to communicate ideas. 

Intentions: 

  • To teach the process of creating quality art, contextual understanding, record, experiment, develop, refine and present an informed response. 
  • To teach basic skills in drawing and painting using a range of media. 
  • To embed an understanding of the formal elements; line, tone, colour and texture. 
  • To teach at 2 or more processes alongside drawing and painting such as collage, print making, digital art, photography, relief and sculpture. 
  • To develop critical understanding of the work of artists and how to use this to develop their own practical skills and inspire their own ideas. 

Content

Students will learn about: 

  • The different art movements and key artists throughout the different time periods. 

Projects involving the use of: 

  • The formal elements. 
  • The processes of multiple disciplines including drawing, painting, print making, mixed media, 3D construction and photography. 
  • The colours on the colour spectrum.  

Projects may include: 

  • Landscapes 
  • Portrait and Identity 
  • Artists/ process based work 

Assessment

  • Feedback is provided verbally and in sketchbooks. 
  • Each project is marked holistically using the KS3 assessment matrix and a percentage recorded. 
  • Targets for each student is established based on prior attainment. 
  • 1:1 discussion with students during lessons to discuss progress. 

Homework

Homework is normally set every fortnight to three weeks, but this may vary depending on where we are in each project. Generally, homework relates to the project we are studying. 


Enrichment Activities

Art and photography club is offered to years 7, 8 and 9 where we explore a range of projects and ideas or where students can choose to explore something of their choice. 


Equipment

Preferred equipment includes a 2B pencil, eraser and coloured pencils. A4 sketchbooks will be provided. 

Subject Introduction

The aim of the year 8 scheme of learning is to learn how different cultures use art within their lives and traditions. 

 

Intentions: 

  • Use the formal elements of art; line, tone, colour, shape, form, texture and pattern. 
  • Skill in drawing from observation, sketching, drawing for purpose of design and imaginative drawing. 
  • Skill in the use of various artistic processes. 
  • Creativity and imagination in the development of ideas. 
  • An understanding of artists, cultures and traditions and how these inform their own work. 
  • Effective annotation skills. 
  • Working both independently and as part of a team. 
  • Assessing, evaluating and setting targets for their own and others work. 

Content

Students will learn about:  

  • The different cultures and the art they produce. 

 

Projects involving the use of: 

  • The formal elements. 
  • The processes of multiple disciplines including drawing, painting, print making, mixed media, 3D construction and photography.

  • Nature, animals, bird and multi-cultural forms
  • Mask making/ headdress 
  • Pattern/ printmaking

The aim of the year 9 scheme of learning is to learn how art is used as a form of narrative in media and as a social commentary. 

Learning Intentions: 

·       The process of creatine quality art; contextual understanding, experiment, develop, refine and present an informed response. 

·       To revise basic skills in drawing and painting and making using a range of media. 

·       To teach new skills and advanced technique in a range of artistic processes including drawing, painting, collage, print making, digital art, photography, relief and sculpture. 

·       To understand how art is a visual language and how the formal elements of art can be used to communicate ideas and meanings. 

·       To understand how art has been used throughout time as a means of narrative and social commentary through the exploration of various artists and genres. 

·       To understand how genres such as Surrealism and Pop Art are used in the modern world such as advertising and media. 

 

Modules

Students will learn: 

·       About a variety of artists/ practitioners relevant to their work. 

·       About a range of different techniques, processes and media and be able to apply it to their work. 

Projects involving the use of: 

·       Drawing and painting 

·       Digital art 

·       Construction 

·       Photography 

·       Collage 

Projects may include: 

·       Surrealism 

·       Sculpture, kinetic art, Op art (group work) 

·       Fanzines

Key Stage 4

Content

Students will learn: 

  • Further information and content of the assessment objectives and the expectations of the course.
  • About a variety of artists/ practitioners relevant to their work. 
  • About a range of different techniques, processes and media and be able to apply it to their work. 

Projects may include: 

  • Self-Image
  • Natural Forms
  • Personal project chosen from a range of teacher set topics. This will contribute towards the student’s portfolio. 

Assessment

  • Sketchbooks are assessed at least once a half term. 
  • Feedback given to individual pieces of work. 
  • 1:1 discussion with students during lessons to discuss progress. 
  • Portfolio: 60% - Started in year 10 
  • Externally Set Task: 40% - Started in January of year 11.

AO2: Refne work by exploring ideas, selecting and experimenting with appropriate media, materials, techniques and processes

Homework  

Homework is set as needed throughout the projects. Students are expected to work for at least 2hrs outside of lessons on their work per week. 


Equipment 

Preferred equipment includes a 2B pencil, water colour paints, eraser and coloured pencils. A3 sketchbooks containing good quality cartridge paper will be provided. 

Content

Students will learn: 

·       Extended content knowledge of the assessment objectives and the expectations of the course. 

·       About a variety of artists/ practitioners relevant to their work. 

·       About a range of different techniques, processes and media and be able to apply it to their work. 

Projects may include: 

·       Personal project chosen from a range of teacher set topics. This will contribute towards the student’s portfolio. 

·       Externally Set Assignment: This will involve students choosing a topic set by the exam board and will take place between January and May.

  • Sketchbooks are assessed at least once a half term. 
  • Feedback given to individual pieces of work. 
  • 1:1 discussion with students during lessons to discuss progress.

Sixth Form

A-Level Fine Art at St Wilfrid’s (AQA 7202)

Subject Intent

Art and Design is a space where students explore creative thinking, visual communication, and self-expression. Through a broad and inspiring curriculum, learners develop both technical skill and independent vision. This course nurtures curiosity, personal voice, and confidence—essential for a wide range of artistic and academic futures.


Course Overview

Title:

  • Fine Art (7202)

Includes two components:

Component 1: Personal Investigation (60%)

  • A practical portfolio of work based on an idea, issue, or theme of personal interest
  • Supported by a written element (1,000–3,000 words)
  • Internally assessed, externally moderated

Component 2: Externally Set Assignment (40%)

  • Preparatory period followed by a 15-hour controlled assessment
  • A choice of themes set by AQA—students develop their own personal response

There is no written exam—assessment is entirely based on portfolio and final practical outcomes.
