Key Stage 3

Subject Introduction

Year 7 Drama is your passport to a world of exciting exploration and creative expression. We'll dive headfirst into the essential skills that bring characters to life, from mastering the art of tableaux to transforming into hilarious celebrity impersonations. Along the way, you'll uncover the secrets of puppetry, the drama of ancient Greek theatre, and the thrilling techniques of a top spy. This is your chance to collaborate with classmates, build confidence, and discover the magic of theatre. Your Year 7 child will receive a Drama lesson once every two weeks.

Assessment

Students complete termly assessments in practical formats. 

Autumn Term Assessment: Creating a pantomime

Homework  

Homework is varied. Some homework will be completing tasks started in class, some rehearsals, and some linked to assessment preparation. 


Enrichment activities 

Year 7 students will be invited to extra rehearsals in order to further prepare for practical assessments and gain an understanding of the professional process in creating drama. We also strive to give all students the opportunity to experience and participate in live theatre. There is also the opportunity to take part in our whole school performance in the Summer Term and there is also the opportunity to take part in the lunch time Drama Club, taking place on Wednesdays on the stage. 

Subject Introduction

Students in Year 9 will be introduced to the drama skills required for practical performances, learn about the wide range of roles within the theatre industry, and develop the analytical and evaluation skills required for the Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9-1) in Drama. Students will focus on establishing a supportive class environment to enable performance skills to develop and thrive. Students will develop their practical drama skills through the exploration of a range of theatre practitioners and theatrical styles.

Students complete half termly assessments in both written and practical formats.

Key Stage 4

Subject Introduction

Year 10 students will begin their AQA GCSE (9-1) in Drama. They will undertake an in-depth study of 'Blood Brothers' by Willy Russell for Component 1, developing their understanding of the text, characters, and theatrical skills. For Component 3, they will rehearse two extracts from a published play. For Component 2, students will devise, perform and reflect on their own piece. Students will also experience and critically evaluate live theatre performances, such as 'Six (the musical)', to understand professional theatre-making, as part of preparation for Component 1.

Spring Term 1st Half: Component Three Mock – Performing a Text 

Spring Term 2nd Half: Component One – Texts in Practice 

Summer Term 1st Half: Begin exploring the contrasting performance text for Component 2. Students read and analyse the text, selecting key extracts for their performance/design. 

Summer Term 2nd Half: Component 1  - Blood Brothers revision and Component 3 


Assessment

Non-Examination Assessment: Practical exploration of a simple stimulus, demonstrating basic understanding of performance skills as well as generating a written portfolio (AO1) 

Assessment: Performing an extract from  a play 

Assessment: Examination style questions on the 4 marker, 8 marker, 12 marker and 20 marker questions 

Assessment: Performance of devised piece (Component 1). (AO2) Practical exploration of a scene from the Component 3 performance text, demonstrating understanding of character and performance style. (AO3) 

Assessment: Mock examination on Component One Section A, B and C (live theatre review), as well as extract work for Component Three.

They will carry on undertaking an in-depth study of 'Blood Brothers' by Willy Russell for Component 1, developing their understanding of the text, characters, and theatrical skills. For Component 3, they will rehearse two extracts from a published play, analysing extracts and developing performance for assessment. Practical exploration will include workshops exploring various theatre practitioners and styles. This course fosters collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking, equipping students with the skills needed for their GCSE assessments combined with regular practice.
