Is There More to Life Than This?

“By faith Noah built an ark… to save his family.”
Hebrews 11:7

God knows what is to come.

The ‘Big idea’ this week takes a step of faith. In Hebrews 11:6 we read, “Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek after him.”

I met this week with an Imam. We had a deep conversation about our faith and were able to share our personal experiences and perspectives. At the end of our time together he said, “I presume you teach RE?” I love this assumption (as a Science teacher), because it allows another misconception to be raised: how can you teach Science and believe in God. The thought that science is out to prove God does not exist, or that everything that we experience in this life can be explained scientifically is a discussion I love to have. The faith placed in the ability of science and scientists to explain everything makes me aware that faith is a preposition of us all.

In uncertain times it can be difficult to keep faith. In Luke 8:22-25, we read of the disciples panicking in a storm. They feared for their lives, believing they would drown. But Jesus slept. When they woke him, a word form Jesus to the storm calmed the raging seas. Jesus then asked his followers, “Where is your faith?” Our present situation could be described as a storm. That’s why it is so important for us to consider the same question, “Where is your faith?”

Noah was a man of faith. In Genesis 6:9 we read that, “Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.” This faith was tested when God told him his plan to begin a new covenant with man, through his family. Noah’s response? “Noah did everything just as God commanded him.”

Noah had a direct command from God. Noah followed that command. Now that was faith!

As we look at faith stories this half term, I pray that you will have the confidence to share your personal experiences and learn from the stories of others. Can I encourage you to ask questions and go deeper; your story may strengthen someone who needs it today!

What is your response?
As you read the devotional, set some time aside to ask God how the word can change you today.
James 1:22 says "Do not merely listen to the word...do what it says." How can you live out the challenges set, or share the encouragement from the post today?
