At St Wilfrid’s, we strive to provide a curriculum that enables our students to ‘Live life to the full.’ Their experiences both inside and outside of lessons enables our students to develop holistically. Through knowledge acquisition, students understand more about the way in which the world works, whilst through the process of learning they develop both their thinking and character. Our Christian and British values are interwoven throughout our teaching so that students learn to value themselves and others.
We provide a rigorous academic and vocational curriculum that is accessible, enriching and challenging. It prepares students for their examinations and their life beyond the Academy. Through inspirational teaching, our students develop the knowledge and the disciplinary thinking within each academic subject. This develops their skills and understanding so that they are ready for employment. Students’ resilience is fostered through stretching teaching and through our diverse extra-curricular programme. We encourage students to use new technologies within the classroom, so that they are accustomed to adapting to a society where technological changes is the norm.
Our teachers are highly skilled and understand how to develop students so that they are ready for the next phase of their education. As we refine our curriculum, we review ‘What is taught and how?’, we are modifying our programmes of study so that students gain a deeper understanding and love of their subjects. Assessment is used effectively to identify student performance at each stage against our expectations and to inform the necessary actions in order to support students in their next steps. Reading is a fundamental skill for learning; at Key Stage 3 we regularly assess the reading age of students and appropriate intervention is deployed that quickly addresses gaps. Literacy and numeracy are embedded throughout the curriculum, so that our students develop these essential skills for life.
Through the coherent programme of personal, health, social and economic education, we develop confident and safe citizens who are advocates of change. Students identify the pathways that they find appropriate, fulfilling and rewarding through our co-ordinated approach to Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance.
